ACGA - Still Waiting on the FTF on that Yeti - Winter Geocaching
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 31 December 2008 20:04

We are the few, the brave, the daring. Willing to suffer icy hail and sheets of stinging wind for the thrill of the hunt and the joy of the find. Yes, we'll drive through two feet of snow and then walk when our wheels fail. We'll abandon the warm and cheerfully lit sanctuaries of our homes for that FTF. We are: Winter Cachers.

TRURO DAILY NEWS
TRURO — There’s treasure in them thar’ hills.
Or, perhaps it’s buried behind an old stump not far from your backyard. Either way, if you want it, you are going to have to search for it.
A number of a new limited-edition coins, called the geocoin are being hidden throughout this community and other parts of Nova Scotia as part of a new geocaching initiative aimed at getting people moving and active in the great outdoors.

“This unique sport encourages healthy lifestyles and activity among youth who play an important role in building communities,” said Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac, of the initiative launched this week.

“Geocaching is another way that Nova Scotians are demonstrating innovation though our community access (C@P) sites, while considering the quality of life of future generations.”

Cape Breton Celtic Caching Challenge GC1F87J

"Failte do Innis leis thar Mille Tashtay" welcome to an island with over a thousand caches.

A wonderful way to celebrate the changing of the seasons and enjoy the good company of fellow cachers. Caching on Cape Breton Island in the fall. And for those who attended the second Capre Breton Celtic Caching event, many thanks for travelling to St Peter's and joining in.

Stagunner and Down Home Girl hosted this event on a cool fall day. A gathering at St Peter's Canal National Historic Site started the day. 9AM sharp and the cachers arrived, most with looks of bewilderment. Most were wondering if the cache reviewers had forgotten to do a very important job earlier the night before. It seems that the caches did not get releaseed, but that just meant that other pland had to be implimented. Staguner had his and Down Home Girl's cached loaded in the laptop so we had proceeded to get them uploaded to the many GPSr on hand. We would have had more but MineRP did not bring his computer. So loaded with 25 or so caches and the hints that stagunner shouted, “if it looks like it is in a tree it is, if it looks like it will be near a rock it is!!!”, the happy group went off to explore Isle Madame and other beautiful parts of the Cape Breton Islands.

ACGA were invited to deliver two geocaching sessions at this fall's Becoming an Outdoor Woman program in Beddeck, Nova Scotia.

The Becoming an Outdoors -Woman® (BOW) program is a workshop primarily aimed at women but is an opportunity for anyone 18 years or older to learn outdoor skills - skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, but useful for many outdoor pursuits.

Originally started in the United States in 1991, Nova Scotia began offering the program to women in 1997. Its primary focus is assisting people to overcome barriers, whether social or financial, to learning outdoor skills.
