We are well into 2010 and the outlook for geocaching in Atlantic Canada is looking great!

Winter Activities
Geocaching in the winter is a great opportunity to join in a group hike and log some finds. There are a number of organized hikes planned, so here are a few:
1. Ice Walk 2010 (GC221KE) - Shediac, NB
2. Porcupine Inland - Lake Echo, NS

Keep an eye on the Group Hike board on ACGA for more as many group hikes are planned within a week or two: http://forum.atlanticgeocaching.com/index.php?board=95.0

As with most winter activities, dressing appropriately for a hike is a necessity to avoid any complications that might occur on the trail. Here are some basics on layering that will help you plan your next outing. (http://www.weather.com/activities/recreation/ski/articles/snowboarding_dress.html)

Wicking layer: This is the layer worn next to your skin, usually consisting of long underwear.

Insulating layer: This middle layer includes sweaters, sweatshirts, vests and pullovers. The purpose of this layer is to keep heat in and cold out, which is accomplished by trapping air between the fibers. Popular insulation materials include:

Protection layer: The exterior layer, generally a shell and pants, serves as your guard against the elements of winter. It should repel water from snow, sleet or rain and block the wind, while also letting perspiration evaporate.

And remember, SAFETY FIRST!
